The 4 Major Cow Families at Ziems Farms
"Rosa", "S", "Lona" , and "Ivy"
The Rosa family started in 1970 when Barb and Steve got
married while at Cornell. One of our goals was
to breed a good herd of cows and we discovered the
wonderful Freebrook herd of Kerm Marquis. Studying the
herd we took a chance and purchased a rough GP-81 4 year old Perseus gr' dtr.
Kerm put in a club sale for $750. Freebrook Royal Rosa EX, 200,000 would become the
foundation of a family that now has 7 generations of Excellent. Old Rosa's dau,
Ziems Original Rita 3E-91-GMD 4 X 1000 fat, was our most important cow of the '70's.
Now the queen of the family is Ziems Charles Rebecca 3E-94, 39,000.
Over 25 Excellents have been bred from this family and our recent classification
yielded Ziems Modern Rock EX-93, 38,000 and Ziems Running Black Mark EX-92, 36,000.
Having $300 left after we bought Rosa, we bought an
open heifer at a Canandaigua Sale. She calved once and left
the herd. However, her dtr., Ziems Ivanhoe Skeeter left 2
dtrs., both EX. Our most important cow of 1980's
Ziems Bootmark Shine 3E-92 GMD, DOM, 300,000, Jr.
All-American nominee was from this family. In the 1990's
the star of this family was Ziems Lindy Swish 2E-92,
41,000 and 1st 2 yr old Eastern National 1995.
Swish's full sister Squish 2E-91, 35,000 is the dam of Ziems Storm Sydney EX,
5y a 6th generation EX. The family has produced over 30 EXs.
Most recent notables are Ziems TDA Sonya EX-93 and Ziems Lee Selia EX-94
(a gr'dtr of Shine) both All-NY in 2003 and anchors of our All-American
nominated Best 3 in 2003 and Reserve All-American in 2004.
While at Cornell, Steve met Dev Hurley. Dev had a
marvelous young Citation R gd'dtr. Hurcroft Marshall Lona
EX. In 1982 when Dev became a classifier he asked us to
buy 1/2 of the family. Included in the deal was a well
balanced gr'dtr. of Lona. Hurcroft Matt Carlo Libra 5E-92, 229,000, All-NY
would become one of the finest and important cows we have worked with.
Her gr'dtr Huzie Starwars Laddie 3E-92, 240,000, All-NY, would be Tim's
junior animal his entire junior career. The reigning matron is Laddie's dtr.,
Ziems Test Laddies Lad 4E-93 315,000 a very youthful 12.
Her oldest dtr.,
Ziems Encore Lads Lust is a 7th generation EX scoring 2E-91 and has a Skyfame dtr.
Over 30 EX have come from the Lona's. They last, many living past 15 and 16.
Oakenbound-WF Ijon Ivy was added to the herd in 1987 in an
effort to add an index cow to the herd. She had a wonderful pedigree
sons in AI, and would become EX-91, GMD, DOM. Flushed to Blackstar, she produced Ziems Blackstar Ivory 3E-92 GMD, DOM, one
of our most influential cows. Ivory's 1st 4 milking daus are Iva EX-91,
2206 fat, Ivanna 2E-93, 1906 fat, Icon 2E-92 1448 fat and Intrigue VG-89 1446 fat.
The family literally exploded in 1998 and bulls, females and embryos were sold
everywhere. Since, 7 Ivy's have been contracted for Japan and this family
brought us into the serious merchandizing side of Registered Holsteins.
Perhaps the finest Ivy is Ziems Airliner Iguanna, EX-94 47,000 a dtr. of Iva.
She can merchandise, milk, show and most importantly re-produce.
Her two oldest dtrs are Ziems Lantz Ize, EX-91, 6th generation EX
and Ziems Stoneham Iggy, EX-91, 2nd calf just fresh with a Rudy dtr.
Iggy is another potential 6th generation EX!
